Part of the structure of Castlegarde Castle to the twelfth century. The five storey tower house was built by Donal Mor O’Brien, King of Thomond, circa 1190. In 1820, Waller O’Grady purchased the castle and added a three storey extension and a number of gothic embellishments, crafting it into the fine home that is being lovingly restored now by its current owners.
The ghost of a lady dressed in silk has been spotted on the staircase, and the distinct swooshing sound of her dress has also been heard moving through the area. Her identity is not known, but some question whether the lady met her demise by stepping through a non-descript door on the third floor and plunged fifty feet to her death through the murder hole that was on the other side of it.
