Castleboro House was originally built in 1770 by Robert Carew, a prominent Irish politician. Renowned for its impressive scale and elegant architecture, it quickly gained a reputation as one of the grandest estates in the region. The grounds also featured expansive gardens, which were generously opened to the public.

Tragedy struck in 1840 when a devastating fire consumed much of the mansion, sparing only the west wing. According to local lore, one of the Carew daughters rushed back inside during the blaze to retrieve her prized embroidery collection—considered among the finest in Ireland at the time. Sadly, the roof collapsed before she could escape, and she perished as her family watched helplessly. Her spirit is said to linger among the ruins to this day.

The house was eventually rebuilt, but the sense of misfortune continued. In 1856, Lady Carew claimed to have witnessed a ghostly funeral procession approaching the estate. Two days later, she received word of her husband’s death—news that eerily coincided with the exact time of the vision.

Castleboro House met its final downfall during the Irish Civil War in 1923, when it was set ablaze by IRA sympathisers. It has remained a haunting ruin ever since.
