An apartment on Castle Street has long been associated with reports of paranormal activity and is said to be haunted by the spirit of a former local figure remembered as Sir Martin Morgan.
During the 1930s, the building was occupied by the Morgan family, who numbered six or seven members. The household was headed by William Morgan, who ran a corn and grain business alongside his son, Martin Morgan. According to local tradition, tensions developed between father and son after Martin accumulated significant debts. When he sought financial assistance, William is said to have refused, a rejection that reportedly had a profound effect on Martin’s mental health.
Following this, Martin allegedly turned heavily to alcohol and became increasingly unstable. In a state of deep distress, he is said to have taken his own life by slitting his throat inside the building. One of the most persistent elements of the story claims that, as he lay dying, his blood seeped through the ceiling and stained the floor of a female relative’s room below — a detail frequently repeated in oral accounts, though never formally verified.
Years later, a tenant who lived in the apartment claimed to have experienced repeated encounters with an unexplained presence. He described being awakened at night to find a man wearing a hat standing silently in the corner of his bedroom, apparently staring at something unseen before vanishing into the wall. On other occasions, the tenant reported hearing the same figure calling his name aloud, adding to his sense of unease.
Intrigued by these reports, a paranormal writer later visited the apartment to investigate. Upon entering, he noted what he described as an overwhelming atmosphere of emptiness and despair. While conducting audio recordings within the property, he claimed to capture several electronic voice phenomena, some of which he interpreted as hostile or threatening in tone.
In his own assessment, the writer concluded that the spirit of Martin Morgan had not moved on, believing the haunting to be connected to the violent act and emotional turmoil surrounding his death.
