Castle Hacket stands close to the slopes of Knockma Hill in County Galway, a peaceful setting with a surprisingly deep thread of folklore. The surviving tower house dates from the sixteenth century, yet the site carries much older traditions. Local belief held that the Hackett family who lived here possessed a curious ability: they could see or communicate with beings from the otherworld. Some versions say they were “favoured” by these forces, others suggest they were troubled by them, as if Knockma’s unseen inhabitants never quite left the family in peace.

The hill itself has long been tied to fairy lore, with tales of ancient burials and mysterious lights drifting across the landscape after nightfall. Castle Hacket features in some of these stories as a kind of threshold between worlds, where shadows are glimpsed that cannot be explained and where travelers have claimed to see strange glimmers moving among the trees. These sightings rarely come with dates or names, appearing instead as inherited memories passed down by local families.

Today, the ruins and the quieter grounds around them are visited mainly for their history, yet the atmosphere of Castle Hacket remains subtly charged.
