Tucked behind Castlecoote House in the village of Cootehall, Castle Coote is thought to have been constructed sometime between 1570 and 1616. In the final year of its completion, the castle was seized by Sir Charles Coote, who strengthened and refortified the structure. Despite these efforts, it came under attack three times during the 1640s by Confederate forces. Today, only the round tower remains intact. Local legend holds that the upper part of the tower is haunted by the ghost of a man from the Cromwellian era—some believe it may even be Sir Charles Coote himself.
