Have you visited Carrigaholt (off-shore), and did you have an experience you could not explain? Click “Add Your Experience” and share your story.
Off Carrigaholt, witnesses have long spoken of an enchanted island that appears without warning and shows signs of habitation before vanishing again. A 1930s account even tells of a Limerick captain landing provisions and being invited to a house for tea before the island slipped from view. Similar west-Clare lore describes a sunken city—Cill Stuifín—seen at rare intervals farther up the coast, and some put the whole business down to mirage effects over the Atlantic; whatever the cause, the Carrigaholt “island city” remains part of the shoreline’s enduring folklore.
