There is a legend of a spirit said to haunt Corrig Woods, located half a mile outside Portarlington. This apparition appeared at night, so terrifying the horses that they would bolt, overturning carts and causing fatalities. Eventually, no one dared to go near Corrig Woods after dark. A local priest, hearing of these events, reportedly banished the spirit to the sunny side of Corrig Hill, where it was doomed to face only the side of the hill touched by the sun. After that, the spirit was never seen again in the area.
