Careysville House is a Georgian-style residence overlooking the River Blackwater, just outside Fermoy in County Cork. Set within a landscape long associated with angling, the property commands views across the Blackwater Valley, one of Ireland’s most renowned salmon fishing regions.

The present house dates to the 18th century and stands on or near the site traditionally associated with the earlier Ballymacpatrick Castle, a structure now largely lost to time. Like many such sites, layers of history have accumulated here, linking the modern house to a much older past.

Since the 20th century – reportedly from the 1930s – the estate has been connected with the family of the Duke of Devonshire. In more recent years, Careysville House has operated as self-catering accommodation, allowing visitors to stay within the historic setting.

Alongside its history and setting, the house has developed a quieter reputation.

Local accounts suggest that unexplained activity may be connected to the earlier castle site, where it is believed that executions once took place. While there is no clear archival record confirming specific events at this exact location, the association has become part of the property’s folklore.

In modern times, reports from both staff and visitors have focused on particular areas within the house. Rooms identified in some accounts as “Room 1” and “Room 2” are said to be associated with sightings of shadowy figures and unexplained voices. These experiences are anecdotal and vary between witnesses.

The property has also attracted interest from paranormal investigators. The Cork Supernatural Society has conducted investigations at the site, including one in 2023. During this visit, they reported capturing a low-level electronic voice phenomenon in the former servants’ quarters, along with observations of unexplained sounds and movement within the building. As with all such investigations, these findings remain unverified.
