Cangort House is a fine, Jacobean style country house, built c.1870. The property was built on the site of Cangort Castle, which was destroyed in the seventeenth century.

In the 1990s, American writer, Joe Fegan, told The Irish Echo about his experiences while staying at the property as a guest of his late novelist friend, Campbell Black. Fegan said that there was “something odd about Cangort”.

Although his article implied that there was some scepticism on his part, he couldn’t ignore the strange sounds that came from the deserted attic during the night, nor could he write off the pictures that fell from the walls. His host didn’t help matters either. Although he was wary of ghosts, Black mentioned that two friends had visited the property while renovations were being carried out shortly after he had moved in. His guest were accommodated in a freshly renovated room beside a walled off space that he claimed the contractors refused to touch. He continued that, at 3am, he and his wife were awoken by the frantic house guests who were screaming and demanding to leave immediately. An offer to provide another room was politely declined as they did not wish to stay any longer in the house. Despite the hour, they watched as their terrified friends drove off into the night.

Joe himself noted that a number of coins that he had placed on a bedside locker were on the floor by the wardrobe, some distance away, when he returned from the obligatory pub visit. Naturally, he thought that maybe he had dropped them, but the floor was hard wood. There was no way that he could have done so without hearing the clatter. He considered that maybe someone had entered the room while he was out, but he was assured that his room had been disturbed.

Fegan recalled a conversation that he had with a housekeeper during an earlier visit and that he had since discarded – until now. She was waiting for someone to drive her home and Joe casually asked whether she ever stayed at the house herself. Her response was startling. “Oh, no! I would never stay overnight in this house!”. She went on to explain to the perplexed guest how she had been walking up to the house along the driveway one day and that she had her daughter with her. They both heard the distinct sound of riders galloping towards them from the yard. They stopped and expected to observe the riders coming around the corner, but there was nothing. The sound would then be heard three more times before she would peep around the corner to see what was going on… but there was nobody there.

There is nothing anywhere to suggest that there was anything dark at Cangort House and it is apparent that families have lived in the house quite happily. In fact, as of late April 2025, if you have €1,950,000 to spare, you could make this magnificent property your own.
