Burt Castle dates to the sixteenth century and is now in ruin and inaccessible.
Legend has it that a young, local woman became pregnant many, many years ago. The child’s father lived at the castle, did he not want to know, let alone give the poor girl any support. The story goes that she went walking along the shores of the nearby lough, when she encountered some curious swans. Believing that they were calling out to her, she entered the icy waters and drowned. On learning what had happened, her enraged father stormed the castle and identified the man responsible for her daughter’s predicament. He stabbed him and threw him from the castle tower.
The story concludes that swans will gather at the castle when the moon is full and the ghost of the young woman will be seen disappearing silently in to the lough.
