Long before modern development reshaped Portavogie, the area was known for its network of natural springs and dry-stone walls. Among these was a stretch known locally as Queen’s Wall, which gained a quiet reputation for being haunted.
According to local accounts, sometime before the Second World War, a woman became lost during heavy snowfall near the Bog Road and tragically died. In the years that followed, her ghost became known as the wee white wuman of Queen’s Wall. Witnesses claimed to see her figure or feel her eerie presence along that stretch of road – particularly in low light or fog.
One chilling encounter reportedly took place on a foggy night, when a lorry driver was returning to Ardglass after collecting fish from the Portavogie auctions. This was before the ferry service was established, so drivers had to travel via Newtownards and use the Bog Road. As the driver reached that stretch, his vehicle struck something in the road. He stepped out to investigate – but as he looked around, he suddenly felt icy hands press against the back of his neck. Spinning around, he found no one there – but the sensation had been unmistakably real, chilling him to the bone. Shaken, he climbed back into his lorry and drove straight home—vowing never to take the Bog Road again.
