Before the town of Clifden was established, the Bog Road served as the main route to Galway. Along this desolate path, grim tales of murder and betrayal took root—many no doubt embellished over time, but chilling nonetheless.
One of the most enduring legends speaks of a guesthouse known as the Halfway House, said to have operated here during the 1790s. Managed by a sinister pair of siblings, the inn offered shelter to lone travellers—only for those unfortunate guests to meet their end when the clock struck midnight. Their bodies were reportedly disposed of in the nearby bog lakes, while their killers claimed whatever possessions they left behind.
According to local lore, the restless spirits of these ill-fated souls still haunt this lonely stretch of road, doomed to wander the bog where their lives so cruelly ended.
