Built around 1740, Bishop’s Palace originally served as the official residence of the Protestant Bishops of Limerick. Though the current structure dates to the 18th century, records suggest that an earlier episcopal house stood on this site as far back as the mid-1500s. Over the centuries, the building saw periods of renovation, neglect, and changing fortunes as the city grew around it.

By the late 20th century, Bishop’s Palace had fallen into disrepair and faced the threat of demolition. In 1986, the Limerick Civic Trust stepped in and took over the property, restoring and repurposing it. The building has continued to serve as the Trust’s headquarters since then, ensuring its preservation at the heart of the city’s historic core.

Yet Bishop’s Palace is not remembered only for its architectural and civic importance. A lingering ghost story has long been associated with the house. Staff, volunteers, and visitors have reported cold spots, unexplained footsteps, and the distinct sensation of being watched in rooms that should be empty. The most persistent tale speaks of the restless spirit of a bishop’s wife, said to still wander the corridors of her former home. Some describe her presence as sorrowful, others simply quiet and watchful — a memory of the past that refuses to fade.
