Located just south of the village of Raphoe, Beltany Stone Circle is one of Ireland’s largest and most enigmatic prehistoric monuments. Believed to date from the Bronze Age (around 1400–800 BC), the circle consists of more than sixty standing stones arranged on a hilltop, overlooking the fertile countryside below. The site’s name is thought to derive from Bealtaine – the ancient Celtic festival of fire and renewal – suggesting that Beltany may once have been a ceremonial gathering place, possibly linked to seasonal rituals.

Local folklore, however, gives the site a darker reputation. For generations it was said that human sacrifices were once offered here in pagan times, and some still claim to feel a strange, uneasy energy within the ring – especially at dusk.

Visitors have also reported unexplained phenomena in recent years. One man who photographed the nearby woodland later claimed to see a human face among the trees when he examined the image. On another occasion, a woman taking a short three-second video at the site said that she and her tour guide heard a woman crying, followed by the disturbing sound of a man retching or vomiting – despite there being no one else present at the time.
