Until the close of the nineteenth century, men lived in fear of a female spectre known as Gaolai. Her haunting path formed a triangle between Bealad, Bandon, and Clonakilty, where she would prey on solitary male riders. Gaolai would suddenly leap from the roadside onto the back of their horses, grappling with them in a struggle to strangle them, before vanishing without a trace. Ultimately, she was driven away by a local priest.
