Doonagore Castle, perched above the Atlantic near Doolin, likely dates back to the late 16th century. While the tower itself is striking, it is the beach below that carries the darker legacy.

In 1588, following the failed Spanish Armada campaign to invade England, a ship from the fleet was wrecked off the coast near Doolin. Of the survivors—approximately 170 Spanish sailors—none would find safe haven. They were captured by Boetius MacClancy, the High Sheriff of County Clare, and subsequently hanged at Doonagore Castle. Their bodies were buried in a nearby barrow known as Cnocán an Crochaire (“Hill of the Hangman”).

Locals say the spirits of those unfortunate sailors still linger, and ghostly figures are said to haunt the shoreline—men who escaped drowning only to meet a more brutal fate on land.
