The site of the former Banbridge Workhouse — now occupied by the Banbridge Health and Care Centre in County Down — has long been associated with ghostly sightings. Locals have reported apparitions wandering the grounds and nearby road, including the image of a man walking along the perimeter fence who vanishes without warning. In another account, two figures were seen crossing the road near the old hospital, only to disappear before reaching the other side. Many believe these spectral figures may be the lingering spirits of former workhouse inmates or patients from the hospital that later stood on the same ground.
Established in 1841 as part of the Poor Law system, the Banbridge Workhouse provided shelter for the destitute during some of Ireland’s darkest years, including the Great Famine. In 1932, it was converted into Banbridge District Hospital, serving the community until its redevelopment into today’s modern health facility.
