Hidden away on Achill Island, Annagh Strand is often called the island’s “Secret Beach.” Accessible only by boat or via a steep and challenging footpath, this secluded bay offers breathtaking beauty by day—but after dark, it’s a different story entirely.
Visitors are warned: the spirits said to linger here are far from welcoming.
Local legends tell of shipwrecks off the rugged coastline, and some say the restless souls of drowned sailors still haunt these shores. Adding to the area’s eerie atmosphere, the remains of a megalithic tomb and an ancient booley village can still be found near the bay. In times past, farmhands stayed in these stone huts to tend livestock in the remote hills rather than make the long journey home each day.
One particularly unsettling tale recounts a group of young people camping overnight in one of the old booley huts. In the dead of night, as they rested alongside their dog, an unseen force allegedly lifted the animal and hurled it at the group.
Another chilling account tells of a woman found dragging her mattress away from the strand in the middle of the night. She never fully explained what had frightened her so badly—but vowed never to return.
Other visitors have reported phantom horses galloping along the shoreline, their hoofbeats echoing through the still night air. Some have also encountered a tall, thin man lurking in the shadows, silently watching but never approaching.
Some speculate this mysterious figure is a Fear Gorta — a spectral being from Irish folklore said to appear as a harbinger of famine or misfortune. Though feared in legend, the Fear Gorta can also bring good fortune if shown kindness. Interestingly, witnesses at Annagh Strand have not reported feelings of dread from his presence—only the unsettling experience of being quietly observed.
