The building now home to the Golden Thread Art Gallery in Belfast originally served as the Belfast Corporation Gas Office.

In the early 20th century, the upper floors of the building became the focus of unusual and unexplained activity. Staff arriving in the mornings frequently discovered that furniture—often large and heavy—had been mysteriously rearranged overnight. In some instances, entire rooms appeared to have been completely upended without any sign of forced entry.

These incidents, though never officially explained, contributed to a lasting belief that the premises may be haunted.
