Built in 1760, this terraced three-bay, three-storey residence stands on a quiet residential street in Waterford City. Though unassuming in appearance, 19 Lady Lane has developed a reputation for unsettling activity over the years. By the 20th century, the once fine property had been subdivided into low-cost, self-contained flats, housing students and workers. Several former occupants described disturbing experiences within the house, and the building is noted for having an unusual basement – likely an old wine vault, with a distinctive door and staircase – beneath the ground floor.
The attic, in particular, was frequently associated with activity. Residents spoke of an unseen presence at the end of the bed, sudden drops in temperature, and whispers heard during the night. One tenant became so distressed that he abandoned all of his belongings and refused to return – even to collect them. A friend later retrieved his possessions on his behalf.
The ground floor told a different kind of story. A tenant occupying the room opposite the basement repeatedly encountered the figure of a man carrying a pig under his arm. On each occasion, the figure asked for directions to the local market before vanishing. The persistence of these encounters left the tenant unable to continue living there. According to a former employee of the property’s owner – a man named Arthur, who has since passed away – Arthur himself confirmed the account and arranged for the tenant to be relocated to alternative accommodation. It is, by that account, a true story.
