Tucked into the busy junction of Donegall Street and Union Street, The Front Page is best known as a lively Belfast pub. By day and into the evening, it presents nothing out of the ordinary – just another well-frequented city centre venue. Yet behind that familiar exterior, there have long been quiet reports of something less easily explained.
Stories of unusual activity at the premises appear to have circulated since at least the early 2000s. At that time, the pub’s then-manager, John McElhatton Jr., was said to have acknowledged that staff had experienced a number of strange and unsettling occurrences, particularly in the upper floor areas of the building.
Those accounts share a number of recurring details.
Staff working late or closing up for the night have described an uncomfortable shift in atmosphere once the pub empties – an awareness of presence where there should be none. On more than one occasion, individuals reported catching brief glimpses of what appeared to be an elderly man moving through the building, only for the figure to vanish when properly looked at.
Other experiences are more difficult to dismiss as misperception. Unexplained laughter has reportedly been heard echoing through empty rooms after closing time. Security alarms have been triggered without any clear cause. Some staff have spoken of sudden and pronounced drops in temperature, occurring without warning and confined to specific areas of the building.
One oft-repeated account describes a member of staff preparing to lock up for the night. As he moved to switch off the lights, he became aware – just at the edge of his vision – of a figure passing nearby. When he turned, there was no one there. Almost immediately, the atmosphere shifted. The temperature dropped sharply, and, despite having already been powered down, music began to play from the pub’s sound system. Alone in the building and unable to explain what was happening, he abandoned the task and left.
In a similar vein, another staff member is said to have fled the premises after hearing laughter coming from the bar area well after closing time, only to find the space completely empty upon investigation.
While individual incidents such as these are difficult to independently verify, what gives the story its persistence is the consistency of the wider pattern. Over time, multiple staff members – working different shifts and in different role – have described broadly similar experiences: fleeting apparitions, unexplained sounds, sudden cold, and an unsettling sense of not being alone.
Notably, there is no widely known tragedy or historical figure firmly tied to the building that might account for the presence described. The identity of the reported “old man” remains unknown, and no clear origin for the activity has been established.
As a result, The Front Page occupies an interesting place in Belfast’s lesser-known paranormal landscape. It is not a location defined by a single dramatic incident or well-documented haunting, but rather by a collection of quiet, recurring reports – shared mostly among those who have spent time within its walls after hours.
