The site where Citibank’s Dublin headquarters now stands once held a very different building – a traditional city pub with a private residence above it. That upstairs home was occupied by a woman and her family, and for years it was known locally for an unusual presence: the ghost of a long-dead seaman who was said to haunt the house.
According to those who lived there, the spirit was not malicious, but he made his presence unmistakably known. His heavy, trudging footsteps were often heard climbing the stairs, and doors would quietly open on their own, as though someone unseen had pushed them. The family grew accustomed to the activity, though it frightened them at times.
When the family eventually moved out, the house remained empty for a while – yet the strange phenomena did not stop. Neighbours in the adjoining house began reporting the same disturbances: footsteps on their staircase, doors opening without explanation, and the constant sense of someone moving just out of sight. It was as if the seaman’s ghost, missing the family he had grown used to, shifted next door in search of familiar company.
The old pub and residence have long since been demolished, replaced by the modern Citibank complex. But with the original building now erased from the landscape, some wonder whether the lonely spirit of the seaman still lingers – pacing unseen through corporate corridors where the staircases he once climbed no longer exist.
