The Castle Inn

The Castle Inn
Delvin, Westmeath, Ireland.

This property no-longer exists.

In 2005, several buildings in the centre of Delvin were demolished to make way for a mixed use development. Among the buildings that were knocked, was a pub called the Castle Inn.

The once popular local bar was reputedly haunted by a man, who some believe may have been the blacksmith who once had a workshop here. Local folklore tells of how the mysterious figure stood in the doorway of the pub on the day of his own funeral and watched the passing procession. On a few occasions, the landlord’s children would report seeing him sitting in bar when they went downstairs to watch their cartoons, but when the landlord went down to check on the locked pub, he found it to be empty and still fully secure. The landlord himself had an odd encounter one evening when he was alone in the locked bar. He described how he felt that there was someone there with him, and was so certain of it that he went upstairs to check on his sleeping family and ensure they were alright. Sure enough, they were all sound asleep.

The sweet aroma of pipe tobacco would be detected in the old pub, even when the pub was closed or there were no smokers there at the time. Interestingly, one resident who now lives in an apartment that was built on the site, claims that the strong scent of pipe smoke is still often detected in their home, even though they are non-smokers.

The pub eventually closed, the family moved out and the property was left abandoned. When work commenced on redeveloping the site, a worker accidently pulled down an overhead cable and was trapped in his cab until the supply could be switched off. When freed, he revealed that he had seen a man walking through the rubble. His colleagues were perplexed as the site had been cleared, and when the cable came down it would not have been safe for anyone to be there. The worker described what he had seen, and his description matched that of the man that had been spotted in the old pub.
