Tarbert Bridewell Courthouse and Jail Museum

Tarbert Bridewell Courthouse and Jail Museum
Tarbert, Kerry, Ireland.

Tarbert Bridewell was constructed in 1831 and served at the county’s courthouse and jail for more than 100 years.

Prisoners were detained at the jail pending court hearings, but these only took place once a month. This meant that prisoners would have to wait for several weeks in appalling conditions, living on bread & gruel. When they did come before a judge, “justice” was harsh. Those presiding over the cases didn’t need to be qualified or even fair, they just had to be wealthy and well connected. Some took pleasure from the power the court bestowed upon them. Imagine being deported for stealing a cabbage or a book – it happened.

The old courthouse and jail has been fully restored by members of the local community, but some of those working at the museum will not enter the building alone after dark. An oppressive feeling has been experienced, particularly on the first floor. It is believed that a former judge still haunts the building.
