The partial remains of Ormonde Castle still remain on Arklow town’s main street.

Many, many years ago, a young drummer boy was given the responsibility of keeping watch and warning of impending attacks on the English garrison located here. But one night, the tired young lad fell asleep. Irrespective of age, this was considered a very serious matter, as his assumed negligence could have been catastrophic for the castle. As a punishment, he was locked away. Some stories suggest he was put in the dungeon, while others say he was sealed inside a chamber – either way, this punishment was only supposed to last for long enough to “teach the lad a lesson”. But those administering this harsh punishment completely forgot about him.

When they realised their own mistake a few days later, it was too late. The boy had perished from starvation, and (curiously) his head had been cut off.

It was said that the sound of his drum could be heard whenever the town was in danger, and some believe his ghost still haunts the old castle.
