Hazelwood House

Hazelwood House
Sligo, Ireland.

Hazelwood House is either closed or it may be a private property. Please refer to Visitor Notes for further information.

Hazelwood House dates to the 18th century and was the seat of the Wynne family for more than 200 years.

On the 27th of February 1887, Stella Fanny, wife of then owner, Owen Wynne (the sixth Owen Wynne), was riding home from a visit to Newtownmanor. She was accompanied by Miss McClintock and the two ladies were riding in a small carriage, drawn by a single horse. The horse suddenly bolted and the two passengers were thrown to the ground. While her passenger was uninjured, Stella herself hit her head on a gatepost and the impact fractured her skull. She passed away from her injury two days later.

It is said that people walking along the shores of Lough Gill have encountered Stella’s ghost, emerging from the foliage looking disheveled and confused. She will sometimes ask the witnesses “where am I?” before disappearing.

Hazelwood House and the surrounding lands were acquired in 2014 and are now home to a distillery. A painstaking restoration is well underway at the house itself and it will be interesting to see what the future brings for this once fine property.
