Grangemellon Castle

Grangemellon Castle
Grangemellon, Kildare, Ireland.

The ruins of Grangemellon Castle are located beside the river Barrow. The castle was owned by Colonel John Hayes St Leger, Governor of Ceylon, who by the age of 26 appeared to have it all – power, property, friends in high places and enviable good looks – the latter earning him the nickname ‘Handsome Jack’. He was also a member of the infamous Hellfire Club and some of their meetings took place at the castle.

St. Leger died in India, aged 44. His is now said to haunt what remains of his castle, and he has been spotted, riding in a ghostly coach, drawn by four horses and a coachman, on a number of occasions. His footmen have also been seen. Interestingly, the driver and footmen are reputedly headless.
