The western face of Woodcock Hill is popularly known as Gallow’s Hill. In the mid-seventeenth century, Cromwell’s army executed rebels here.

In recent times, a couple out walking in the area reportedly encountered a mysterious man standing on a mound. They recalled that he was dressed entirely in black, complete with a long coat and a hat. They were alarmed and suspicious and returned to their nearby car, but when they turned around to look again, the stranger had vanished.
