Dublin Castle was built in the early thirteenth century on the site of a Viking settlement.
In the 1950s, a Garda sergeant recounted an experience that he had while stationed at Dublin Castle. He recalled that he was alone in the dormitory one night, when the light suddenly switched itself off. He switched it on again and checked that he was alone, and sure enough there was nobody else there. He then heard the sound of coal being shoveled in to a fire in a nearby kitchen, but when he went to investigate, he found the room was empty and that the coal and shovel had not been disturbed.
A building in the upper yard is also reputedly haunted by a woman who lost her beloved in a battle.
