Cong Abbey

Cong Abbey
South Cong, Mayo, Ireland.

Many thanks to L. Johnson for suggesting that I include Cong Abbey in this directory. I validate all suggestions and do my own research before publishing to see if there’s any more information I can share, so sometimes it can take a while for me to process them. Site users are (as always) welcome to suggest an amendment or to add their own experiences.

This Augustinian abbey was founded by High King of Ireland, Turlough O’Connor, around 1138. An earlier 6th century church at the site was associated with Saint Féchín. At it’s height, it would have accommodated up to 3,000 people.

Within the abbey is a an area known as the Monks Fishing Hole. For reasons unknown, a monk is said to have murdered one of his brethren on this spot many, many years ago. The murdered monk is believed to haunt the site to this day. Visitors have reported seeing a strange mist in photos when conditions were perfectly clear at the time they took the shot.
