RUMOUR

Sometimes, evidence of an alleged haunting is too vague for me to include it without query. A site user, or another source, may have referenced activity at this property or in the immediate vicinity, but as yet I have been unable to verify it. If you have had an experience at Clonfinlough Stone or you can add further information, you can suggest an amendment here.

There are conflicting theories on how old the carvings on the Clonfinlough Stone in County Offaly might be. Some think they were added during the Bronze Age, while others have suggested that the stone may have been a marker for medieval pilgrims. In any case, it is a curious relic which bears several symbols including a Greek letter, a footprint and a cross.

Naturally, a mystical location such as this will inspire many a story. One attached to this stone randomly tells that a man with the name “Michael” will find two pots of gold here one day. Another, tells of a a phantom horseman that will manifest from time to time, galloping through the area. Whether any of this is true is of course open to interpretation, but I’m sure the hill is spooky at night.
