Castle Demesne & Bailieborough

Castle Demesne & Bailieborough
Bailieborough, Cavan, Ireland.

For generations, a sinister character known locally as the “The Rector”, was said to haunt parts of Bailieborough. Witnesses described seeing a tall, formally dressed gentleman in a tall hat, pacing the avenue leading to the castle (demolished in 1937). The sound of horses pulling a carriage was also heard in this same area. One story speaks of a nearby landowner being awoken from his slumber by the sound of horses passing through his yard, only to find no trace of them when he investigated and his own horses quiet, safe and undisturbed in their stables. His story was supported by others nearby who also heard the sound.

Another story recounts how two men were walking down Thomas Street late one night, when they witnessed a tall figure walking towards them. They both observed him passing through a securely locked door. It was also claimed that several witnesses spotted the silent spectre of a coach lead by four horses passing down Bailieborough’s main street.

It would be interesting to know whether there have been any more recent accounts of hauntings in this area. If you have something to add, click “Add Your Experience” to tell your story.
