Cahernane House Hotel

Cahernane House Hotel
Killarney, Kerry, Ireland.

Cahernane House was constructed for Henry Herbert in 1877. An earlier house at the site did not meet the standard expected by Henry’s wife Katherine (Stewart), and who could blame her – latrines were not befitting of a family of their standing in the late nineteenth century!

The Herberts had five children together, the youngest of which was Gwendolyn who was born in 1877. Gwendolyn lived a full life, working as a teacher and traveling extensively, but her heart was never far from her family home. She passed away in 1966. Many witnesses have reported seeing her ghost ascending the hotel’s magnificent oak staircase.

Another story relating the property speaks of a painting, believed to have been drawn by Katherine Herbert, that was uncovered during restoration works at the hotel. Located in the former nursery, the painting of a humble duck cannot be covered by paint. Despite attempts to conceal the image, the duck will always come back to the surface!

At around 11pm we were in bed and all of a sudden the shower turned on by itself. We were so shocked and entertained by the possible ghost in our room.
