The Ard na Sidhe Country House Hotel is perched on elevated ground overlooking Caragh Lake in County Kerry. Ard na Sidhe is Irish for “hill of the fairies” and this refers to a nearby knoll. Work began on Lady Edith Gordon’s dream home in 1913, utilising local materials and labor to create an Arts and Crafts style home that looked classic even when it was brand new. Following the breakdown of her marriage in 1935, Lady Gordon moved to Waterford. The fine house was later acquired by Hans Liebherr in 1958 and the property opened as a hotel in 1960.
Today, the property offers eighteen guest bedrooms, all furnished to the highest standards, in the main house or in the garden house with views of gardens designed by Lady Gordon herself.
While the hotel acknowledges the presence of a ghost, believed to be that of Bess Stokes – one of Lady Gordon’s ancestors – who has been spotted walking on the hotel grounds, I can find no further information about the haunting.
