Ireland’s former asylums and hospitals are among the most unsettling locations in the country—and some say the spirits of the past have never truly left.
Built to house the mentally ill, the sick, and the forgotten, these institutions often concealed immense suffering behind grand façades. Overcrowding, outdated treatments, and years of isolation left deep emotional scars—and many believe those emotions still resonate within the walls.
From the decaying remains of Our Lady’s Hospital in Ennis, to the sprawling, shuttered halls of St Brigid’s in Ballinasloe, these buildings are rich in history and rife with paranormal reports. Visitors and urban explorers speak of flickering lights, cold spots, ghostly figures, and whispers in empty wards.
The locations listed below are among Ireland’s most notorious former medical facilities—each with its own legacy of tragedy, mystery, and unexplained encounters. Step carefully. Some patients may still be waiting to be heard.
